Car subscription or traditional hire: which one suits you?

Updated 14 October 2026

Three ways to have a car without owning one yet: hire it by the day, subscribe by the week, or buy. The right one depends almost entirely on how long you need it.

The short version

  • Daily hire: a few days, a per-day price, a three-day minimum, you hand it back. From $70 a day with us.
  • Subscription: by the week, rolling, with the running costs bundled into one number. From $199 a week with us, GST included.
  • Buying or leasing: years, a deposit or a loan, and every running cost on you.

What a subscription includes with us

  • The car, by the week, delivered to your door and collected when you are done.
  • Scheduled maintenance and servicing, 24/7 roadside assistance, unlimited kilometres.
  • Comprehensive insurance for the whole of your hire; the excess is set out in the hire agreement.
  • You pay on the day the keys are handed over, then by secure automatic payment each week. A bond is taken on day one and refunded within 24 hours of the car coming back.
  • End it any time with one week’s notice.

Fuel, tolls, parking and fines are yours. Everything else about running the car is ours.

When daily hire makes more sense

A weekend away, a visitor for a week, a car for the days yours is in for a service. If you need it for less than a week or two, pay by the day and keep it simple. There is a three-day minimum.

When a subscription wins

  • Rideshare driving: a weekly number you can plan around, with the running costs already in it.
  • Between cars: yours is being repaired, sold, or on order with a long wait.
  • New to Adelaide, a work contract of a few months, or trying a type of car before buying one.
  • Any time you need a car for weeks or months and do not want a loan, a depreciating asset, or a servicing bill.

Subscription versus buying

Buying is cheaper over many years, if you drive the car long enough to see off the depreciation, and if you want the equity. Subscribing is simpler over months: one weekly number, no capital tied up, and the car goes back when your life changes. The honest line is somewhere around a year: under it, subscribe; over it, run the numbers on buying.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  • Less than a week: daily hire.
  • A week to several months: subscription.
  • Years, and you want to own something at the end: buy.
  • Not sure how long: subscribe, and give a week’s notice when you know.
